Monitoring System Performance

Monitor system performance with XenCenter

The Performance tab in XenCenter provides real time monitoring of performance statistics across resource pools. This tab also provides graphical trending of virtual and physical machine performance.

  • You can view up to 12 months of performance data and zoom in to take a closer look at activity spikes. To learn more, see Viewing performance data.
  • By default, graphs showing CPU, memory, network I/O, and disk I/O are displayed on the tab. However, you can add more performance data and change the appearance of the graphs. To learn more, see Configuring performance graphs
  • Performance alerts can be generated when the following resources go over a specified threshold on a managed server, virtual machine, or storage repository:

    • CPU
    • Memory usage
    • Network
    • Storage throughput
    • VM disk activity

For more information, see Configuring performance alerts.

Note:

Full performance data is only available for virtual machines with XenServer VM Tools installed.

Monitor system performance with NRPE

Note:

The NRPE feature is available for XenServer Premium or Trial Edition customers. For more information about XenServer licensing, see Licensing. To upgrade, or to get a XenServer license, visit the XenServer website.

The NRPE Configuration tab on the Properties dialog allows you to configure NRPE for your XenServer hosts and pools, allowing you to use any third-party monitoring tool that supports the Nagios Remote Plugin Executor (NRPE) to monitor resources consumed by your hosts/pools and dom0 - the control domain of your host. For information on how to configure NRPE, see Monitoring host and dom0 resources with NRPE.

Monitor system performance with SNMP

Note:

The SNMP feature is available for XenServer Premium or Trial Edition customers. For more information about XenServer licensing, see Licensing. To upgrade, or to get a XenServer license, visit the XenServer website.

The SNMP tab on the Properties dialog allows you to configure SNMP for your XenServer hosts and pools, allowing you to use any third-party monitoring tool that supports the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to monitor resources consumed by your hosts/pools and dom0 - the control domain of your host. For information on how to configure SNMP, see Monitoring host and dom0 resources with SNMP.
