Important:

Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 Cumulative Update 1 becomes End of Life on June 25, 2025. Plan your upgrade to XenServer 8 now to ensure a smooth transition and continued support. For more information, see Upgrade.

If you are using your Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops license files to license your Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 Cumulative Update 1 hosts, these license files are not compatible with XenServer 8. Before upgrading you must acquire XenServer Premium Edition socket license files to use with XenServer 8. These socket license files are available as an entitlement of the Citrix for Private Cloud, Citrix Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud, Citrix Universal MSP, and Citrix Platform License subscriptions for running your Citrix workloads. Citrix customers who have not yet transitioned to these new subscriptions can request to participate in a no-cost promotion for 10,000 XenServer Premium Edition socket licenses. For more information, see XenServer.

If you do not get a compatible license for XenServer 8 before upgrading, when you upgrade your hosts they revert to the 90-day Trial Edition. Trial Edition provides the same features as Premium Edition with some limitations. For more information, see XenServer 8 Licensing Overview.

Citrix Hypervisor enables customers with smaller devices to install Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 Cumulative Update 1 by using the legacy DOS partition layout. A small device is one that has more than 12 GB but less than 46 GB of disk space. The legacy DOS partition layout includes:

  • 4 GB Boot partition

  • 4 GB Backup partition

  • SR partition (if present on the local disk)

Note:

The legacy DOS partition layout is not supported with UEFI boot.

To install Citrix Hypervisor on small devices, you must add disable-gpt to the dom0 parameters. You can use the command menu.c32 to add the parameter to dom0.

  1. Access the boot menu.

  2. At the boot: prompt, type menu.c32 and press Enter.

  3. Use the cursor keys to select an installation option:

    • For a single path LUN, select install

    • For a multipathed LUN, select multipath

  4. Press the Tab key.

  5. Using the cursor keys, edit the line that ends /install.img to include the parameter disable-gpt before the last ---.

    For example: ... disable-gpt --- /install.img

  6. Press Enter.

Citrix Hypervisor server installation proceeds as normal.

Note:

The installer preserves any utility partition that exists on the host before the installation process.

Important:

We recommend that you allocate a minimum of 46 GB disk space and install Citrix Hypervisor using the new GPT partition layout. For more information, see Host Partition Layout.
